Creative Director | Biography
Justin resides in Grafton, in the beautiful Clarence Valley of New South Wales, running the J&DC studio in Grafton's iconic Prince Street. Justin is an ex-president who holds the position of Vice President within the Grafton Chamber of Commerce and is very active in a number of committees around the Clarence Valley.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Justin began designing at a very early age, mainly small time business cards for friends and family business. Justin launched his first official business (Deptford Designs) when he was 19, and had many small successes, the business morphed and changed through-out the years to encompass more and more facets, with all monies earnt going straight back into the business.
Justin also worked with Grafton Print and Ron Howard Printing in Grafton and Casino NSW, revitalising the design team and modernising the design processes within the companies before launching his own studio, Justin James Design & Print which is now known as James & Dare Creative.
The making of J&DC | The story so far
The business we now know as James & Dare Creative (or J&DC) actually began its history over 15 years ago under the name Deptford Designs. Back then Deptford Designs was a very small home based business working out of a shed on a property called 'Tinsky' in rural Mornington Peninsula. Over the years the business changed to include Photography and had a 5 year stint under the name Dare Photographix, expanding to shoot weddings in Melbourne and the Gold Coast with four contract photographers.
In 2005 Justin was asked to begin Book Cover Design for one of the USA's leading fiction epublishing houses, Loose ID. Word quickly spread and he was taken up by another 5 houses, and has since completed over 400 Book Covers.
In 2010, after an email from Bestselling Author Geoffrey Knight, Justin embarked on the biggest project in his decade long career; the re-release of Geoffrey Knight's bestselling novel 'The Cross Of Sins'. This set in motion a chain of events that neither Justin nor Geoff had ever thought possible; Justin became a publisher in his own right, building a bestselling author stable of more than 20 authors from across the globe. Splitting into 6 Publishing Imprints and building a contract staff of 5. Named Empire Press after his business Dare Empire, Empire Press was soaring, with a stellar reputation. After 2 years, and the unfortunate (for business) rise in the Australian Dollar, Justin sold the majority of the publishing arms of the company to Storm Moon Press and Turquoise Morning Press, both of the USA.
Upon arriving in Grafton, Justin worked with Grafton Print and Ron Howard Printing in Grafton and Casino NSW, revitalising the design team and modernising the design processes within the companies before launching his own studio, Justin James Design & Print.
Late in 2016 Justin began studying to obtain his Diploma in Interior Design with the Interior Design Institute, which he completed with impressive results in late 2017. In early 2018 Justin attended a Masterclass in Colour Consultation at the exclusive Coco Republic Design School with the amazing Sharon Gage in Sydney.
July 2018 marked the transformation from Justin James Design & Print to James & Dare Creative (J&DC). No longer just offering Design and Print, but Interior Design, Colour Consultation, 3D Imagery Concepts and Social Media Management. While our New England expansion kept the Justin James Design & Print monocle until late 2020 and is now converting over to the J&DC branding.
